Pattern

Notes:

This hat is made from the bottom up.  Chain 1 at the end of the round does not count as a stitch.

You can make this hat to fit any size.  For the purpose of this tutorial, it will be for a 2-4 year old child and a standard medium female adult.

Stitches used (USA terms):

  • Chain-less foundation half double crochet.
  • SC- Single crochet.
  • HDC- Half double crochet.
  • DC- Double crochet.
  • FPDC- Front Post Double crochet.
  • SS- Slip Stitch.

Brim:

Note:

  • The brim is divided into “panels” and columns”. See picture below.
  • For this pattern, you should always end with an even number of panels. This will give you to correct number of stitches for the hat.
  • Number of panels x 3 will give you the beginning stitch count you need for the hat. You must have an even number of stitches for the hat part.
  • You should have 20 “panels” for child hat and 22″panels” for adult.
  • Adjust to size by adding more or less “panels”.
    • Brim length for child is about 16-18 inches long.
    • Brim length for medium adult female is about 20-21 inches long.

R1

  • 10 chain-less foundation HDC. Chain 1. Turn.
  • If you like a shorter brim, do 6 chain-less foundation HDC instead.

R2 to 40 (child), 44 (adult)

  • 10 HDC in 3rd back loop only across. Chain 1 Turn.
  • Repeat to R40 for child, 44 for adult.
  • SS to join. Chain 1. Turn on side.
    • See picture below on how to join the brim together.

The next step is to form the foundation SC to build the hat part.

  • The columns should have 10 stitches and 1 turn chain. For the purpose of this pattern, we will count from the top town for the column on the outside of the brim and bottom up for the column on the inside of the brim.
  • 1 SC into the 1st stitch on the column from where you’ve SS to join the brim together.
  • 1 SC into the 10th stitch in the column on the inside.
  • 1 SC into the turning chain.
  • 1 SC into the 1st stitch in the column on the outside.
  • 1 SC into the 10th stitch in the column on the inside.
  • 1 SC into the turning chain.
  • Repeat to end and SS to first SC. Chain 1

Tidy Rows, Messy Bun Beanie

Last year, the messy bun beanie made its way around all the crochet groups I followed. I really wanted to make some but my hair was so short, I thought it probably won’t look good on me.

This year, my hair has gotten longer so I thought I will give it a try. Here’s my take on the messy bun beanie.

What you will need:

  • Medium weight yarn- I used Hobby Lobby Effervesce in colorway Biscuit, Silver Frost, and Ocean.
  • Something to cut with.
  • Something to weave in the ends with.
  • Size H and I hook.

Brim- With H hook

  • R1
    • 10 chain-less HDC, chain 1. Turn.
  • R2
    • 1 HDC into back 3rd loop of the HDC below across. Chain1. Turn. (10 HDC)
  • R3 to R40
    • Repeat R2
  • Fold brim in half and join with slip stitch (SS) across. Do not cut. Chain 1.

You will now work the hat along the side of the brim you just created.

Hat- With I hook

Made in joined round, so do not turn your work.

  • R1
    • Make 60 SC evenly around the brim. Join with SS. Chain 1.
    • See my post here on how to do this.
  • R2
    • Yarn over, insert hook into 1st SC and pull up 1 loop on to hook.
    • Yarn over, insert hook into 2nd SC and pull up 1 loop on to hook.
    • Yarn over, insert hook into the 2nd SC again and pull up 1 loop onto hook, yarn over and pull through all 7 loops. Chain 1. 1st cluster made.
    • Yarn over, insert hook into 3rd SC and pull up 1 loop on to hook.
    • Yarn over, insert hook into 4th SC and pull up 1 loop on to hook.
    • Yarn over, insert hook into 4th SC again and pull up 1 loop on to hook.
    • Yarn over and pull through all 7 loops. Chain 1. 2nd cluster made.
    • Repeat to end of row.
    • SS to join with first cluster. Chain 1. (30 Clusters).
  • R3
    • Yarn over, insert hook into chain 1 space between first and last cluster from row bow and pull up 1 loop.
    • Yarn over, insert hook into chain 1 space between 1st and second cluster from row bow and pull up 1 loop.
    • Yarn over, insert hook into same chain 1 space again and pull up 1 loop.
    • Yarn over and pulled through all 7 loops. Chain 1. Cluster 1 made.
    • Yarn over, insert hook into same chain 1 space between cluster 1 and 2 from the row below and pull up 1 loop.
    • Yarn over, insert hook into chain 1 space between cluster 2 and 3 from the row below and pull up 1 loop.
    • Yarn over, insert hook into same chain 1 space again and pull up 1 loop.
    • Yarn over, and pull through all 7 loops. Chain 1. Cluster 2 made.
    • Repeat to end. SS to join with first cluster. Chain 1. (30 Clusters).
  • R4 to 10
    • Repeat R3
  • R11
    • Yarn over, insert hook into chain 1 space between first and last cluster from row bow and pull up 1 loop.
    • Yarn over, insert hook into chain 1 space between 1st and second cluster from row bow and pull up 1 loop.
    • Yarn over and pulled through all 5 loops.
    • Yarn over, and pull through all 5 loops. Cluster 2 made.
    • Repeat to end. SS to join with first cluster. Chain 1. (30 Clusters).
  • R12
    • Yarn over, insert hook into top of cluster 1 and pull up 1 loop.
    • Yarn over, insert hook into top of cluster 2 and pull up 1 loop.
    • Yarn over and pulled through all 5 loops.  1 cluster made.
    • Yarn over, insert hook into top of cluster 3 and pull up l loop.
    • Yarn over, insert hook into top of cluster 4 and pull up 1 loop.
    • Yarn over and pull through all 5 loops. 2nd cluster made.
    • Repeat to end. SS to join with first cluster. Chain 1. (15 Clusters).
  • R13
    • If you want to make the opening smaller, do 1 or two more rows of R12.
    • If you want to make a beanie, just continue until you can sew it close, about 3 more rows of R12.
  • Finishing
    • Weave in your ends and add buttons as you like.

Little Bunny Hat and Booties

This year, Easter Sunday is on April 16th.  It seems like months away but it will be here before we know it!

While I was pregnant with my daughter, I thought I would have all the time in the world to make her all these cute little booties and hats.  She’s now a wild toddler and I just finally got around to making these.  Of course, these will not fit her as they are sized more appropriately for a 0-6 month old. They are just too cute!

If you would like to purchase this, visit my shop!

Or, you can make your own as well.

For the booties, I got the main body from this pattern.  I thought the designer did a wonderful job with the pattern. It was super easy to follow and the booties came out super cute. The pattern is for a boot but I stopped after forming the bottom part.  I did some modifications as well.

Modification of bootie

  • When forming the toe section, instead of DC2TOG, I did HDC2TOG. This made the toe section point up slightly.
  • I stopped at step 9.
  • After step 9, I slipped stitched around before cutting and weaving in the ends.
  • I added the pompom tail and bunny ears.

Materials:

  • 1 four prong dinner fork.
  • E Hook
  • Something to cut with
  • Something to weave in the ends

Making bunny ears for booties- Make 2

  • Make sure you leave a long beginning end when forming the chains. We will be using the beginning yarn end and the tail to tie the ears to the booties and weaving in to complete the attached.
  • Chain 6.
  • 2 HDC  into the 3rd chain from hook.
  • 1 SC into the next 3 chains.
  • 3 SC into the last chain from hook.
  • Work your way back on the other side. 1 SC into thte next 3 chains.
  • 2 HDC into the 3rd chain from the hook where you made the first 2 HDC.
  • Slip stitch to join to the first HDC.
  • Cut tail.
  • Attach to the front of the bootie by tying to the 1st HDC2TOG for one bunny ear and the 3rd HDC2TOG for the second bunny ear.
  • Weave in the ends and cut off the extra yarn.

POM POM- Make 2

  • I used a 4 prong dinner fork.
  • Wrap yarn around the 4 prongs about 25 times.
  • Take a long piece of yarn and tie tightly around the middle between the 2 prongs.
  • Take the yarn off the hook.
  • You will have a little bow.
  • Cut the end loops and any extra long pieces to shape the pom pom.
  • Attached at the heel section of the bootie by pulling the yarn through and tying the ends together.
  • Weave in and cut of extra yarn.

Making the hat

You will need:

  • Yarn: I used Loops and Threads Impeccable Yarn in Aran for the main color and Soft Rose for the inside of the ears.
  • Hook: H or 5.0 MM
  • Something to cut with.
  • Something to sew/weave in the ends
  • Stitch Markers or a piece of scrap yarn

NOTE: We will be making the hat in the round.

Start with a magic circle or chain 3 and slip stitch to form a circle. Chain 1.

Round 1

  • 10 HDC into center of circle. Do not join.  Place a stitch marker on the 1st HDC.

Round 2

  • Make 2 HDC into the space between the 1st HDC and the 2nd HDC from the round below.
  • Make 2 HDC into the next space and so on to the end of the row.
  • Place stitch marker on the 1st HDC of this round.
  • This will give your hat a nice texture. You can also just increase into the top of HDC as well for a normal HDC look.

Round 3

  • Make 2 HDC into the space between the 1st and the 2nd HDC from the round below.
  • Make 1 HDC into the next space.

Round 5

  • Make 2 HDC into the space between the 1st and the 2nd HDC from the round below.
  • Make 1 HDC into the next 3 space.
  • Repeat until end of row.
  • Place stitch marker on the 1st HDC of this round.

Round 6 to 17

  • Make 1 HDC into the next space and each space to the end of the round.
  • Place stitch marker on the 1st HDC of this round.

Round 18

  • Make 1 HDC into the next space and each space to the end of the round.

The Bumpety Bump Bump Hat

I love the way this yarn feels but struggled with what to make with it.  I first picked up the yarn around October of last year and finally created something I liked!

The yarn itself is soft but I had a hard time trying to work with how the color transitioned.  This hat pattern allows the colors to transition as if I was making a color change intentionally when I am not even trying.

If you would like to purchase a finished product, please visit my shop here.

Click here to check out my Facebook and like my page!

You can also make your own hat by following the tutorial below.

***I am left handed so the pictures are from how I crochet***

Please be kind and link back to my page if you used this pattern to create your own hat.

Supply Lists:

  • Sweet Roll yarn.  For this tutorial pattern, I used the colorway Root Beer.  The page picture, I used Silver Swirl and Raspberry Swirl.
  • Crochet hook size I.
  • Something to cut with.
  • Something to sew/weave in the ends.
  • POM POM maker.

Start of by making the headband.  For this headband, I did 40 rows of 6 HDC, building up by HDCing into the back 3rd loop of the HDC from the row below.  This is about a woman’s size medium or 18 inches around. See my tutorial here.

This pattern is pretty easy to customized.  To make a hat bigger or smaller, just adjust the headband to the length you need. Just make sure you have even rows.

I cut the yarn and joined the next color section for the body of the hat after making the headband. The yarn naturally changed after approximately  every 6 rows for me.

Once you have the headband formed, turn your work.

Row 1:

  • 1 SC and 2DC into the first stitch.
  • Skip 2 stitches.
  • 1SC and 2DC into the next stitch.
  • Repeat to end and join with 1st SC.
  • Chain 1 and turn.

Row 2 to 18:

  • Repeat row 1.
  • Once you finished the last row, leave a long tail about 12 inches.  We will be cinching the top of the hat closed.

Make your pom pom and attach to hat and you are done!

How to crochet a Knit-like Ribbed Headband for Hats!

This is the easiest way to give your hats a nice knit ribbed look when you are starting a hat from the bottom up.

stacking-blocks-hat

Headband:

Beginning chain 2 does not count as HDC.

Row 1:

  • Chain 2. HDC into 2nd chain from hook. Make 5 more standing foundation HDC or chain 8 and make 1 HDC into the back single loop of the 2nd chain from hook if you do not know how to work standing foundation stitches.  (6)
  • Chain 1 and turn.

headband-6-hdc

Row 2:

  • 1 HDC into back 3rd loop of HDC from the stitch below and across to end. (6)
  • Chain 1 and turn.
  • Repeat until you have the length you need for your hat size.
  • Make sure to always end with even rows.  This will give you

headband-3rd-back-loop

Join to form circle

  • Slip Stitch to join.
  • Chain one.  Do not turn.

headband-slip-stitch

Add first row of SC:

Once you join, You will be adding increments of 3 SC into the top of the headband. To do this, you will be single crocheting into the 6th HDC  on the back of the headband, the turning chain and then the firsts HDC of the front of the headband.

wp-1486853355479.jpg

insert-into-1st-hdc-headband.jpg.jpg

front-of-head-band-with-sc.jpg.jpg

Once you crochet the headband, you can either chain one and continue on with your pattern using the same color yarn or cut and join in a new color.

Ta-Da!  Oh the many things you can make!

The Thick Minnesota Hat

So far this fall, the weather has been really nice to us here in Minnesota. But I know that old man winter will come knocking on our door any moment now so here is the pattern for The Thick Minnesota Hat.

You can make it in many color combos, emblish it, or make it plain.

img_20161101_221222.jpg

Please note: I am left handed. Some adjustments maybe be needed for the right handed crocheters. This pattern has not been tested.

For this same size hat, about 2T to 4T, I used the following hook and yarn.  Increase hook size or increase rounds to make it bigger if needed.

This hat is made with all frontpost double crochet.  The earflaps are single crochet.

When I made the three colored hat, I did not bind off each row but carried the yarn up as needed.  I also made the earflaps as I went. This means less ends to weave in!

Supply list:

  • Crochet hook size G.
  • Yarn: I used Caron Simply Soft for the purple and pink hat.  For the Mini Mouse and pink and white hat, I used Yarn Bee Soft and Sleek.
  • Something to cut your yarn with.
  • Something to weave in the ends with.
  • POM POM maker.

Pattern Notes:

  • Chain 1 at beginning of round does not count as a stitch.
  • DC= Double crochet.
  • FPDC= Frontpost double crochet.
  • BPDC= Backpost double crochet.
  • SC= Single crochet
  • HDC= Half double crochet.
  • 2SCTOG= 2 Single Crochet together

Round 1

Make a magic circle. Chain 1. 10 DC into circle. Join to close.

Round 2

Increase: Chain 1. 2 FPDC across. Join to close.

Round 3

Increase: Chain 1. 1 FPDC, 2 FPDC in the next stich. Repeat to end. Join to close.

Round 4

Increase: Chain 1. 1 FPDC in the next 2 stiches. 2 FPDC in the next stich. Repeat to end. Join to close.

Round 5

Increase: Chain 1. 1 FPDC in the next 3 stiches. 2 FPDC in the next stich. Repeat to end. Join to close.

Round 6

Increase: Chain 1. 1 FPDC in the next 4 stiches. 2 FPDC in the next stich. Repeat to end. Join to close.

Round 7 to 12

Chain 1. 1 FPDC in each stich across. Repeat to end. Join to close.

Round 13

Chain 1. 1 FPDC, 1 BPDC in the next stich. Repeat to end. Join to close.

At this point, you can bind off to start the earflap section of the hat or continue on.  Which ever you are more comfortable with.  I hate weaving in ends so I always try to find a way to avoid it when ever possible.

Round 14

You will notice that the FPDC  creates ridges on the inside of the hat.

Join your yarn in the back ridge of the 1 stich from row 12. 1 HDC in stich and across. Join to close.

Round 15

Chain 1. 1 SC in the next 20 stiches. Turn.

Buttons:

Attached buttons as desired.  I attached my top button about six inches up from the bottom of the edging and center.  The second button is about 2 inches below the first button with an inch gap between the buttons.

They are attached on the inside.  If you use big enough buttons but not too big, you do not need to make button holes.  The buttons will fit through the opening of the double crochets.

One awesome thing about my workplace is that they give us 20 hours to use towards volunteering for the charity of our choice (with some exceptions).

I used a couple of my hours this week to design and also made some hats for our local Veterans here in Minnesota.

Feel free to use this pattern to make gifts for your family and friends. This is a very basic pattern using only double crochet and front post double crochet.

Please note: I am left handed. Some adjustments maybe be needed for the right handed crocheters. This pattern has not been tested.

  • 1 skein of Hobby Lobby yarn, I Love This Yarn in color  “Bright”. I used “Cappadocia” for the sample pictures.
